Fudan won 3 awards in National Science and Technology Awards

By

Fudan’s three scientific research achievements (Fudan as the Principal Investigator’s Institution) were honored with China’s top science award—National Science and Technology Awards, including a first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, a second prize of the State Natural Science Award, and a second prize of the State Technological Invention Award, at the meeting conflating the national sci-tech conference, the national science and technology award conference, and the general assemblies of the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) held on June 24 in Beijing.

Once again, Fudan has achieved the outstanding performance of winning all the three Awards, and it was also the second time in history the university has been honored with the first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award since 2006.

State Scientific and Technological Progress Award

The project “Creation of Peripheral-Central Pathway Repair for Motor Dysfunction of Limbs: A Major Technological Breakthrough and Theoretical Innovation”, led by XU Wendong from Huashan Hospital Fudan University, won the first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

Xu’s team proposes a surgical method to establish new neural pathways between paralyzed limbs and the healthy brain, effectively “changing the brain” for the paralyzed limbs. It has opened up a new field of study for changing peripheral pathways to treat central diseases and confirmed that one hemisphere can control both hands, promoting new developments in brain science. The results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

State Natural Science Award

The project “Theory and Method for Visual Computing by Leveraging Diversified Information”, led by JIANG Yugang from Fudan’s School of Computer Science, won the second prize of the State Natural Science Award.

After over a decade of dedicated research, Jiang’s team discovered that there are helpful clues at varying levels, i.e., data level, feature level and semantics level, of visual computing. For each level, the team designed a principled strategy which fully exploits the diversified information encoded therein.  Based on these research outcomes, the team has demonstrated a track record of winning international benchmark competitions, and developed multiple innovative AI tools that have been used in critical applications like defect detection for high-speed railway infrastructures.

State Technological Invention Award

The project “Design and Preparation of New Technology for Siloxane Hybrid Polymer Functional Coatings and Its Applications”, led by WU Limin, from Fudan’s Department of Materials Science, won a second prize of the State Technological Invention Award.

WU’s team addresses issues with existing marine coatings such as unstable resin hydrolysis, weak interlayer forces, and lack of self-repair and self-cleaning functions. It has invented new siloxane hybrid polymer functional coatings such as long-term self-polishing anti-fouling marine coatings, long-term anti-corrosive coatings that combine primer and topcoat, and self-repairing and self-cleaning coatings. These have been applied to national key projects like the “Tianwen-1” Mars orbiter, resulting in good social and economic benefits.
