Unicorns run by Fudan alumni shine on Global Unicorn Index

The Hurun Research Institute recently released the Global Unicorn Index 2024, a ranking of the world’s start-ups founded in the 2000s, worth at least a billion dollars and not yet listed on a public exchange. 


There are 14 unicorn companies where alumni of Fudan University serve as the main founders or CEOs on the list of Global Unicorn Index 2024, accounting for about 4% of all Chinese unicorns.

A unicorn company is a private company with a valuation over $1 billion. Chinese unicorns, which mainly come from the artificial intelligence, semiconductor, and new energy industries, are the driving forces leading to the rapid development of new quality productive forces.

These Fudan alumni, with great spirit of innovation, strong sense of social responsibility, and high degree of internationalization, continuously open up new fields and become a pioneering force in promoting social progress, demonstrating the infinite vitality and potential of China’s economy in the new era.

Mengxiang

Fudan alumnus: WANG Min (2014-2019, School of Management, Master)

Founded in 2015, Mengxiang is a commodity distribution intelligent solution provider. Mengxiang innovatively developed the B2R (Brands to Reseller) e-commerce model and empowered businesses and retail establishments brands, making transactions simple.Mengxiang developed the “Mengxiang+ Cloud Platform” where manufacturers can independently operate stores, products, and physic flow, and used AI technology to provide manufacturers with intelligent solution for global product distribution to help businesses achieve long-term deterministic growth.

Uisee

Fudan alumnus: WU Gansha (1993-1997, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Bachelor; 1997-2000, School of Computer Science, Master)

As a leading autonomous driving company in China, UISEE is committed to providing AI driving service for all industries and all scenarios and building AI drivers that empower a new ecology of mobility and logistics. Since its foundation in February 2016, UISEE has taken root in the global market and insisted on local R&D.

Relying on its self-developed U-Drive platform, UISEE has built an intelligent driving system that meets the need of multi-scenario and high-level autonomous driving.

Belief BioMed

Fudan alumnus: XIAO Xiao (1977-1981, School of Pharmacy, Bachelor)

Belief BioMed Inc. (BBM) is a biotech company that integrates the research & development, manufacturing and clinical application of gene therapy products. The company is committed to providing innovative and more effective gene therapies for severe genetic and chronic diseases through safe and efficient viral vector technology.

BBM has developed hundreds of key vector technologies, including HEK293 cell suspension serum-free culture process and full-scale chromatography purification process, and has established the commercial production platform for gene therapy drugs in China.

Abogen

Fudan alumnus: YING Bo (1997-2001, School of Life Sciences, Bachelor; 2001-2004, School of Life Sciences, Master)

Founded in 2019, Abogen Biosciences is one of the pioneering biotech companies in China to develop mRNA-based therapeutics. The company bears firm belief in the boundless prospects of mRNA science and technology. Upholding this vision, Abogen have established its own proprietary mRNA platform and LNP-based delivery system to open a world of possibilities for creating an unprecedented abundance and diversity of treatments that address unmet medical needs.

Abogen is one of few biotech companies in China that self-developed all key mRNA platform technologies across mRNA synthesis, delivery and manufacturing. Abogen’s technology platform enables itself to develop vaccines in line with the fast variation of COVlD-19 virus. ARCoV (Commercial name: AWcorna) is the first approved China made mRNA vaccine in combating against global pandemic.

Huayun

Fudan alumnus: XU Guang-Bin (2016-2018, School of Management, Master)

Huayun was established in 2010. Huayun created the “full-core and full-stack” independent Innovation Cloud Platform, Hyper-Converged Solutions, Public Cloud Platforms, Industrial Internet Platforms, and Smart Office Platforms for users to promote the digital transformation of governments and enterprises and improve regional informatization capabilities.

Fudan alumnus: JIA Jia-Ya (1996-2000, School of Computer Science, Bachelor)

Founded by world leading experts with more than 20 years experience in machine vision and deep learning, SmartMore provides competitive solutions by a R&D team of over 400 talents from globally renowned institutions. With optical engineers experienced with imaging software, industrial sensors and lighting, SmartMore is able to provide designs that maximize machine vision solution performance across diverse industrial scenarios.

Fudan alumnus: ZHAO Lu (2014-2016, School of Management, Master)

Taimei Technology is a pioneering healthtech company focused on building a digital ecosystem for the life science industry. Fudan alumnus: DENG Guo-Biao (2000-2004, School of Management, Bachelor; 2004-2007, School of Management, Master)

Fudan alumnus: GU Tie (1986-1989, School of Physics, Bachelor)

SeeYA Technology Corporation is a high-tech enterprise specializing in the research and development, design, production, and sale of OLEDoS displays. It is a team committed to establishing an application chain for OLEDoS displays, providing customers with end-to-end microdisplay solutions.

Hellobike

Fudan alumnus: LI Kai-Zhu (2005-2008, Software School, Master)

Hellobike is a professional local travel and life service platform in China. It is committed to applying digital technology to provide people with more convenient travel and better inclusive life services. As of now, Hellobike has more than 600 million registered users.

Currently, Hellobike mainly provides mobile travel services and emerging local services. Mobile travel services include two-wheel sharing services and four-wheel travel services. Other Local services include Hello Rental electric vehicles, the independent brand “Street Cat” that provides intelligent solutions for urban stray cat management and so on.

Sangon Biotech

Fudan alumnus: WANG Qi-Song (1986-1989, School of Life Sciences, Faculty Member)

Sangon Biotech is a Sino-foreign joint venture high-tech enterprise, affiliated to the group company BBI LIFE SCIENCES. Sangon Biotech is committed to providing products and services in the field of life science research, and providing upstream raw materials to industrial customers such as medical diagnosis. It is one of the well-known suppliers with comprehensive coverage in the life sciences industry and one of the world's largest manufacturers of customized DNA synthesis products.
