Presidents’ dialogue on development of Greater Bay Area

On behalf of Fudan University, President Xu Ningsheng met with the heads of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), University of Macau (UM) and Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) via video links during the 19th Annual Presidents’ Meeting on Building World-Class Universities. Xu also signed cooperation agreements online with the heads of UM, MUST and HKU on October 14-15.


President Xu signed cooperation agreement with Song Yonghua, rector of University of Macau on October 14.



Xu said, as a comprehensive public university, UM has made great achievements in promoting the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He looked forward to boosting joint research with UM in disciplinary construction as well as frontier and interdisciplinary areas, giving full play to Fudan and UM’s respective advantages and deepening cooperation in various areas. He hopes that by following the guidance of the General Plan for Construction of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, the two universities will contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.


Song briefed Xu on UM’s strategy for serving the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He looked forward to deepening cooperation with Fudan University in the fields of public health, finance, microelectronics and artificial intelligence to bring out the potential of the advantages of UM and serve national strategic needs.



Upon signing the Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Fudan University and the University of Macau, the two universities will hold a joint meeting annually to support the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Starting with double degree programs in finance, the two will deepen their academic and research cooperation in economics, finance, public health, microelectronics, artificial intelligence, brain science, humanities and social sciences, etc., and accelerate the application of the research achievements


President Xu signed cooperation agreement with Joseph Hun-wei LEE, president of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) on the same day.



Xu said, as the General Plan for Construction of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin requires us to obtain high-quality human resource, Fudan and MUST should step up cooperation in talent fostering and attraction. He welcomed further consultation on exchanges and cooperation between the two universities.


Lee said MUST is committed to contributing to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He hopes to cooperate with Fudan University and other universities in Chinese mainland in the fields of materials and engineering, while promoting the integration of industry, education and research.



According to the Cooperation and Exchange Agreement between Fudan University and Macau University of Science and Technology, Fudan and MUST will promote exchanges and cooperation in areas of shared interest and strengthen cooperation in pharmacy and traditional Chinese medicine by sharing more academic resources and providing each other support for education and research.


According to the General Plan for Construction of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Macao will promote research and development and high-end manufacturing, construct a batch of much-needed technology infrastructure, organize and launch large international science projects and facilitate the construction of industry-education-research demonstration bases of UM and MUST to transform itself into a hub of technological innovation and industrial application of technologies.


President Xu signed cooperation agreement with Zhang Xiang, president of the University of Hongkong (HKU) on October 15.



Xu hopes to continue to promote the joint MBA program with HKU and looks forward to working closely with HKU in cutting-edge science and technologies to better serve the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.


Zhang Xiang briefed Xu on the construction of HKU’s Shenzhen campus which is expected to promote the sharing of high-quality educational and research capabilities with other cities in the Greater Bay Area. He pointed out that HKU plans to build an open international laboratory in Pokfulam, Hong Kong Island, and it is willing to cooperate with Fudan to provide a platform for exchanges between top scientists at home and abroad to facilitate meta-innovation in the Greater Bay Area as well as the country’s economic and technological development.


Later, the two universities renewed their cooperation agreement on the MBA program. Since 1998, the program has produced more than 5,000 management personnel and leaders for the country and society. Both parties will continue to give full play to their respective advantages to enhance their management knowledge and global competitiveness.


President Xu met with Wei SHYY, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on October 15.



Xu hoped that the cooperation with HKUST would further promote the emergence of innovative theories, which is a new focus in the “14th Five-year Plan” of Fudan University. Through its Institute of Precision Medicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Fudan hopes to share scientific and technological achievements with HKUST and apply research achievements in precision medicine at home and abroad to industrial production to serve the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.


Shyy made an introduction to the disciplines of HKUST. He said that HKUST has set up interdisciplinary programs in Guangzhou and is looking forward to conducting exchanges and cooperation with Fudan University on issues such as the ethics of artificial intelligence. HKUST looks forward to forming a long-term in-depth relationship with Fudan to give full play to the respective advantages of the two institutions.


The scientific research cooperation between Fudan and HKUST began in 1996, and the collaborative achievements cover many frontier fields such as biology, photoelectric technology and automation. The two universities will continue to deepen cooperation and lead innovation to contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the future.


President Xu met with Rocky Sung-chi TUAN, president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on October 15.



Xu congratulated CUHK on its achievements in biomedical innovation. He spoke highly of CUHK’s solid foundation in building state-level laboratories. Fudan looks forward to working with CUHK on promoting the construction of national medical centers and scaling up cooperation in tumor, obstetrics and gynecology through high-quality and influential cooperation projects.

Xu congratulated CUHK on its achievements in biomedical innovation. He spoke highly of CUHK’s solid foundation in building state-level laboratories. Fudan looks forward to working with CUHK on promoting the construction of national medical centers and scaling up cooperation in tumor, obstetrics and gynecology through high-quality and influential cooperation projects.


Tuan made an introduction to “CUHK 2025” strategic plan, which shows CUHK’s commitment in striving for excellence and greatness. He said CUHK will seize the development opportunities of the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta to fulfill its social responsibilities and stimulate the innovation ability of talents. He looks forward to working with Fudan to inject strength into China’s development in science and technology.


Scientific research cooperation between Fudan and CUHK can be traced back to 24 years ago. This year, the number of joint research achievements has risen to 72. The research projects have been greatly improved in both quality and quantity. Last June, the two universities set up a joint research center for life science and medicine.


Fudan University will further deepen its friendship and cooperative relations with universities in Hong Kong and Macao, making full use of its key disciplines, research resources and outstanding researchers and faculty to contribute to educational development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Fudan will conduct in-depth cooperation with the universities of the Greater Bay Area, and transform the achievements into practical use.


Through the existing state-level key laboratories in Hong Kong and Macao, Fudan and its partnering universities will promote intercollegiate scientific resources sharing, strengthen faculty and student exchanges and foster students who are competitive on the international stage so as to better serve China’s development and build world-class universities.
